German Clay Road
(Deutsche Tonstraße)

The German Clay Road leads you through Oberhavel and the Ruppiner Seenland on a circular path of 215 kilometres from south to north. Individual stations present the traditional history of the clay and ceramics production in the region.

In the 18th and 19th century the brick industry was flourishing and characterized the landscape, towns and villages sustainably. The bricks produced were the most important construction material for the growing metropolis Berlin and transported into the Prussian residential city by boats.

Starting from the "furnace town" Velten the German Clay Road leads through the clay mining landscape near Zehdenick and the Brickyard park Mildenberg. It ends at the HB workshops for ceramics in Marwitz which were founded by Hedwig Bollhagen in 1934. Various artists in Oberhavel have continued the tradition of this craft and allow visitors an insight into the work on clay in their workshops and studios.

The beauty of the scenery accompanies you along the route with many lakes inviting you to rest or bathe. Some of them emerged from the former clay pits and are today habitat of many animal and plant species.
